What Our Research Uses
Our pipeline discovers products through web searches and checks retailer listings for specifications, availability, and prices. It uses published product information and third-party commentary, including search-result snippets, to identify strengths, limitations, and suitable uses.
These sources have limits. A search snippet is not a complete review, a reported experience is not our own experience, and we cannot independently verify that every commenter owns the product. Missing specifications remain unknown rather than evidence that a feature is absent.
What the Scores Mean
AI evaluates each product against criteria chosen for its category, such as comfort, performance, or ease of use. The overall score is a weighted combination of these category scores and value. The weights differ by product category. Open Score details on a comparison to see its breakdown.
The current scoring pipeline constrains individual scores to a range of 5 to 10. A high score means a stronger assessment against those criteria; it is not a laboratory measurement or a guarantee of quality. Scores should be compared within the same product category and research cycle, rather than across unrelated products.
A recommendation can reflect a particular need, such as a small space or simpler controls, rather than the highest overall score. Read the reasons, specifications, and drawbacks alongside the number.
How Value Is Calculated
Value combines the weighted non-price score with the recorded price, then compares that result with the researched products in the same group. In the current calculation, the quality score is squared and divided by the square root of the price. That result is compared with the group average and mapped onto the scoring range.
This is a relative estimate, not a claim that a product has the lowest price anywhere. Prices change, and the calculation uses a minimum of $10 when a price is lower or unavailable. When pricing information is missing, treat the value score with particular caution and check the current retailer listing.

We use AI to assist research, scoring, and writing. It can make mistakes or miss important context. We do not describe research as our own hands-on testing. Older articles may reflect earlier scoring methods and are refreshed through our publishing cycle; this page describes the current process.
